Teacher: James Martin McGeough

Incident: McGeough allegedly engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old female student between 2008 and 2009 while teaching in Vancouver.

Outcome: Found guilty of professional misconduct, reprimanded, no new certificate issued for 15 years.

Teacher: Albert Doerksen

Incident: Several incidents at an independent school between 2004 and 2010 of making disparaging comments to students such as, “Did a Martian zap your brain?” plus angry outbursts in class.

Outcome: Teacher admitted to professional misconduct and reprimanded.

Teacher: Ronald Norman Ball

Incident: Ball admitted on two occasions he sexually harassed a teacher by touching her backside.

Outcome: Ball admitted to professional misconduct, agreed not to teach those under 18 in B.C., certificate cancelled for nonpayment of fees.

Teacher: David Thomas Hobbs

Incident: The Vernon teacher taught a lesson on volcanic magma in 2009 by having a Grade 7 female student lie on her back and rub her legs, then sit on top of three male students to demonstrate rock pressure formations.

Outcome: Teacher admitted to professional misconduct, agreed to certificate cancellation.

Teacher: Douglas James Luymes

Incident: The Burnaby teacher was arrested and charged with assault and forcible entry after responding to the home of someone offering sexual services on Craigslist.

Outcome: The teacher resigned after the incident. The charges were stayed, subject to a peace bond. Teacher agreed to have his certificate cancelled for three years.

Teacher: Jane Kemp

Incident: The Vancouver elementary teacher advised quarrelling students in 2012 that it was only fair that one hit the other back.

Outcome: Teacher admitted to professional misconduct and was reprimanded.

Teacher: Naeem Kassamali Datoo

Incident: The Vancouver high school teacher called in sick in 2012 to travel to Calgary to support his brother, who was competing in the Special Olympics.

Outcome: He was suspended for one day, and his sick days were docked from his paycheque. He admitted professional misconduct and was reprimanded.

Teacher: Clinton Heath Fox

Incident: Fox was charged with assault in relation to a 2009 incident involving his mother-in-law where he shoved her, causing a nosebleed.

Outcome: The charge was stayed, subject to a peace bond. His teaching licence was suspended as of 2012.

Teacher: Robert Lee Davies

Incident: The Langley elementary school teacher showed students shirtless pictures of himself in 2012 and told inappropriate stories about drinking and driving and masturbation.

Outcome: His certificate was cancelled due to professional misconduct.

Teacher: Margo Anne Fowler

Incident: In 2012, the Vancouver high school teacher duct-taped the mouths of three students in grades 8 and 10 for talking in class.

Outcome: The teacher admitted professional misconduct, and was reprimanded.

Teacher: Roderick Lyle Sauve

Incident: In 2010, the Prince George district suspended the high school teacher after reports he was being investigated by police for sexual involvement with a then-14-year-old student in 1981 that lasted over a year.

Outcome: He pleaded guilty to gross indecency in court in 2012 and served a conditional sentence. He admitted professional misconduct, was denied a certificate for life and agreed to never again teach youth under 18.

Other troubling teacher discipline cases from previous years include:

Teacher: Gregory Watson Seed.

Incident: In 2011 he was driving a school bus of students at speeds up to 116 km/h in 60 km/h zones, and there were public reports of reckless driving.

Outcome: He was issued a speeding ticket and given a three-day teaching suspension

Teacher: James David Long

Incident: In 2007, he made a series of racist comments to students, including telling some to “Go back to Korea,” and also spent a class playing air guitar and ignoring students.

Outcome: His certificate was rescinded.

Teacher: Stephen Alan Soames

Incident: The teacher had a repeated conflict with another colleague between 2009 and 2010. Later, when the principal saw him with a chainsaw, Soames joked he was “going postal and giving everyone a few seconds’ head start.”

Outcome: The teacher admitted professional misconduct, was given a five-day suspension and ordered to take anger-management counselling.
