White Rock, BC — On January 5, 2026, at 11 a.m., dozens of residents held a peaceful protest and press conference at the White Rock Promenade, strongly demanding that the city government remove policies related to “Supportive Housing” from the draft of the 2026 Official Community Plan (OCP) and jointly explore alternative solutions more suited to the city’s scale, population, and public service capacity.
Protesters oppose the provincial government’s mandatory supportive housing policy, expressing concerns that such projects will exacerbate public safety issues, drug abuse, and community pressures. They emphasize that White Rock has limited resources and is unsuitable for high-risk housing experiments.
The event calls for protecting long-term community quality of life and seeking balanced, sustainable solutions.
Protesters further noted that Bills 44 and 47 have significantly weakened municipal governments’ decision-making authority as direct representatives of public opinion, marginalizing public participation.
Particularly concerning is that the provincial government ignored the unique functional, operational, and risk management aspects of Supportive Housing and Complex Care Housing (CCH) facilities during legislation, categorizing them simply as regular residential types while using the bills to restrict municipal and resident involvement and oversight. This effectively deprives communities of their rights to information, objection, and supervision over major social service projects, constituting a serious trampling of local public will.
Residents urge the provincial government to re-examine the legislation and restore local autonomy.
